About This Blog
The Last Captain's Log is an independent publication launched in June 2026 by Tobias Urban.
I'm a 50 year old man living in the United States, poring over his history to determine what forces shaped me to become the person I am now, in the hopes that I can glean something from old journal entries (lived experience, thoughts that ran through my head) which might help to navigate a different future.
Or they might do nothing at all.
Blog goals are sparse: I wish to chronicle details of my life, as told by myself, in journal form. I have about twenty years of journal entries dating back to 2005 that will ultimately live on this website as I unearth my own history and put it on display.
Entries will be rough and often unpolished. Journal entries often have an intense focus on my internals. I originally did not write these for others to read – I did not, for example, string sentences together with any kind of hope that someone would someday secretly discover these entries and read them, as teenagers sometimes do. Most entries deal with the unpleasantness of life and personal efforts to cope.
Some are observational, dealing with day to day occurrences. In others, I evaluate my future direction. There are elements of substance abuse throughout, laced with the themes of struggle, which often amount to: What is this path that I'm on? Should I stay on it? Or should I exit?
This is not a recovery blog, but I am in recovery from everything, it seems.
Some semantics:
There are two basic kinds of entries: Pre-Dated (historical journal entries) and Current, where I muse about whatever it is seems to be occupying my thoughts and time.
I may eventually allow comments but for the time being this is a read-only affair. If you want to contact me, click the box on the header and I'll see it. If you include a valid email address I might respond.
I'll be posting a few times a week – some new entries, and some old.
Thanks for reading.
